CinemaSerf on Searching for Sugar Man

It's a really strange documentary, and there were moments when I questioned whether the entire narrative was fabricated. The film centers on Sixto Rodriguez, who released two albums in the early 1970s that received some positive reviews but failed to connect with audiences—at least not in the United States. However, it was said that his records sold nearly half a million copies in South Africa before rumors spread that he had died onstage, supposedly by setting himself on fire. This occurred long before such an event could have been reported, and it appears the story grew into something of a legend, with people claiming to have witnessed things that never happened. The reason is because the film’s focus is on how someone located him; he's very much alive and recently retired from construction work in Detroit. Picture his surprise when "Sugar" Segarman—a record store owner and self-proclaimed detective—got the opportunity to interview him! What follows includes a selection of his music, which I felt was similar to a combination of Don McLean and Bob Dylan, while we hear his account of what occurred. It’s a considerably less sensationalized and newsworthy version of events. The film also incorporates several interviews with music critics. Malik Bendjelloul has created an interesting exploration of this story. Whether you choose to accept it or not is up to you.
