I have to say, this documentary might just be the most entertaining one I’ve come across. It tells the story of a singer from the seventies who somehow managed to elude my awareness—and that’s saying something, considering my age. He's undeniably a more accomplished poet and songwriter than Bob Dylan; I stand by that statement, and as someone who writes poetry myself, I feel confident in making such an assertion. Anyone familiar with how the music business operates, particularly regarding the prejudice prevalent in America at the time, will quickly grasp why a Mexican singer-songwriter of the seventies could be overlooked by DJs influenced by payola and exploited by record labels. The film itself is remarkably inventive, and discovering what ultimately happened in the quest to find Sugar Man is genuinely moving and inspiring. If you’re into this kind of music, you absolutely need to watch it—even if it's solely for the fantastic soundtrack.
