A few striking moments and a palpable mood can’t disguise an emptiness at its core, alongside a plot that wanders aimlessly with a resolution that doesn’t quite work, plus some uncomfortable depictions of women. It needed perhaps two or three truly exceptional performances to rise above being just another excessively violent procedural show. The opening credits, reminiscent of Brakhage's style, are far superior to the movie itself. Random allusions to well-known books don’t make it any more intelligent, either. This seems to embody what people who dismiss “film bro” movies often assume is typical of contemporary thrillers. It hasn’t stood the test of time particularly well.
