Alastair Sim seems perfectly suited to playing the grumpy miser who habitually spends his Christmases by himself, tallying up his wealth. Fortunately for him, "Scrooge" is interrupted by a visit from his former business partner, “Marley” (Michael Hordern), who informs him that three spirits will be calling on Christmas morning. These ghosts are there to reveal what has occurred, what’s currently taking place, and what could potentially happen if he doesn't change his greedy and self-centered behavior. Meanwhile, in a modest dwelling close by, his clerk "Bob" (Mervyn Johns) is celebrating with his wife and five children—including the spirited but frail “Tim” (Glen Dearman). As morning arrives, might "Scrooge" discover redemption through the truths being shown to him? This adaptation delves deeper into the development of the character, enhanced by a cheerful performance from Jack Warner as his former employer "Jorkin," and it also provides more opportunities for the supporting cast. Kathleen Harrison and Miles Malleson offer some moments of levity as "Scrooge" begins to understand the scorn and disapproval he inspires in practically everyone—regardless of their wealth or poverty. Ultimately, it's Sim who truly embodies the character here. He radiates the essence of the role, his expressions communicating menace, fear, delight, and playfulness in a very entertaining way, and by the end, you can tell that he relished the part as much as I did. The film effectively portrays both the emotional and physical coldness and harshness of the story, serving as a reminder that no one should isolate themselves—or be content doing so. I wouldn’t go so far as to say Sim surpasses Sir Seymour Hicks in this role, but he's certainly just as capable.
