This really should be required watching for anyone who dislikes Christmas cheer. Beginning with the delightful character drawings by Ronald Searle, and continuing through the excellent acting from Albert Finney—who received a Golden Globe award—Sir Alec Guinness, Dame Edith Evans, Kenneth More, and many other familiar performers from British theater and film, it just feels like Christmas to me. The music and songs composed by Leslie Bricusse seem as true to what Charles Dickens wanted to express as if Dickens himself had written them. Ronald Neame is at his finest here.
