This film easily ranks among the top slasher movies released since 1996. The initial *Scream* really resonated with me – the unexpected twists, the suspense, its clever understanding of itself as a movie, and the humor woven throughout. It felt like a fresh take on horror and started a series of follow-ups that were hit or miss. And this latest installment is the strongest since that original! It managed to recapture what made the first one so enjoyable. The danger felt real because they brought back familiar faces, making it clear that anyone could be in peril. The directors seemed to relish in misleading viewers by incorporating every imaginable slasher movie cliché. Moments of building tension arose whenever a character approached a shadowy entrance or peered into a cabinet—the expectation being that the killer would be lurking nearby, but *Scream* subverts that expectation! This playful and knowing use of familiar elements is central to what makes *Scream* work, and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett really got it right.
