It's remarkable how long it’s been since “Scream” first came out, revitalizing the slasher genre after it had grown tired with a lot of straight-to-video and cable releases, plus uninspired movies in theaters. The original film was hugely successful, leading to a strong trilogy and making the Ghostface killer and various scenes from the series into well-known parts of popular culture. After a break, “Scream 4” continued the story, and then in 2022, another "Scream" movie arrived, much to the excitement of its fans. When a young woman named Tara (Jenna Ortega) is attacked violently in a way that resembles Ghostface’s methods, her sister Sam (Melissa Barrera) returns to Woodsboro to be with her while she recovers. Sam brings her boyfriend Richie (Jack Quaid), who isn't familiar with the history of Woodsboro or the “Stab” film series, which is based on the real murders that have affected the town. Sam’s difficult past makes returning home challenging, and when Ghostface attacks again, she and Richie turn to Dewey (David Arquette) for help. He’s been struggling and has separated from Gayle (Courtney Cox). Despite his hesitation, Dewey gets involved and reminds Sam of the “rules,” suggesting that the killer might be someone close to her. Soon, everyone in Tara's and Sam's circle becomes a suspect as the deaths increase. This leads to some of the film’s best moments, with characters referencing other horror franchises both old and new, and talking about things like online trolls, overzealous fans, and other cultural touchstones. This provides some humor about the series and shows that the world of “Scream” is one where people are knowledgeable about horror movies, having adapted the rules based on sequels, prequels, and what they call "Requels." As the tension rises and more people die, Gayle, Dewey, and Sidney (Neve Campbell) must confront their fears to stop Ghostface before it’s too late. Although the ending feels exaggerated and occasionally silly, it still provides many of the things fans have come to expect. I was able to figure out almost all of the plot twists early on and wasn't very surprised as the movie progressed; however, I think most people will still enjoy watching the story unfold because after four films, I pretty much know the pattern. Also, I’ve had this experience before—I guessed what would happen in “The Sixth Sense” and “The Village” early too, so it seems like I just have a talent for spotting these things. It doesn't really do anything new, but the film gives fans what they want, and I found it more enjoyable than "Scream 3." There are rumors that a sixth movie is already in development, and if that’s true, I’ll be ready for it. 3.5 out of 5
