I went into this one feeling uneasy, to say the least. I really disliked the silly "Ghostface" movie from last year. However, it seemed like things couldn’t possibly get any worse – and surprisingly, it turned out to be considerably better than expected. The storyline feels familiar, like something straight out of a "Scooby Doo" episode. The killer somehow gets past strong security measures, seems to be everywhere simultaneously, has access to private phone numbers, etcetera; and the victims who are attacked show an unbelievable ability to bounce back from injuries that would have killed an elephant. That isn’t really what's important here, though. Unlike many other films of this type, it's genuinely frightening and functions well as a sort of send-up of itself. If you’ve seen the previous movies in the series, you understand how things typically unfold – and this one is simply another iteration of that formula. The narrative isn't truly significant; what works is the way the filmmakers create an atmosphere of entertaining dread and anxiety, with some genuinely startling moments. By using mostly unknown actors (and keeping Courteney Cox, whose performance feels stiff, to a minimum), they’ve managed to make a film that can be quite scary at times. There are numerous new characters who become potential suspects, including Josh Segarra ("Danny"), who brought Christian Bale to mind, and Jack Champion ("Ethan"), who seems rather clumsy, all leading up to an ending that was pretty absurd! This isn't going to challenge your intellect in any way, but as a skillfully made piece of entertainment with some genuinely funny lines and a shocking scene involving a boy and a taser, it’s worth seeing.
