Scream VI starts with a very effective opening scene, exactly what viewers anticipate from the series, and it delivers. The change of location, taking place in New York City, feels like a refreshing update. Although there’s some self-awareness present, it isn't as pronounced as it was in Scream V. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett return with their talent for creating memorable sequences, but they seem to have elevated that skill even further. Every situation is carefully constructed to build suspense and anxiety, which then results in plenty of gore. The scene on the subway proved particularly frightening. The female characters are central to this installment—Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, and Jasmin Savoy Brown all give performances that make their characters relatable and engaging. This demonstrates that the series can not only continue but also flourish without relying on familiar faces from previous films. I plan to watch it again soon.
