This strange combination of genres—a film blending elements of horror, crime, drama, and political thriller—features Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, and Peter Cushing, and it’s at least passably entertaining. A “vampire serial killer” is terrorizing London (played by Michael Gothard), and a tenuous link emerges to the enigmatic clinic run by Dr. Browning (Price). A young doctor becomes involved in following this lead as he seeks explanations (Christopher Matthews). The cast also includes Christopher Lee, Marshall Jones, Alfred Marks, and Peter Cushing, who has a brief appearance. “Scream and Scream Again,” released in 1970, is set in London and incorporates elements of science fiction and horror alongside crime/drama and political intrigue. It brings together superhuman killers resembling vampires with militaristic figures reminiscent of Nazis and doctors evoking Frankenstein’s creation. The film shares qualities with “The Tormentors” (though that production had a significantly larger budget) and later films like “The Formula” (1980), as well as the Frankenstein-inspired aspects of "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" (2008). I understand those titles came much later, but I’m trying to give potential viewers some sense of what this unusual film is like. The actresses are adequate, including Judy Huxtable (as Sylvia), Judy Bloom (a police officer), Yutte Stensgaard (Erika), and Uta Levka (a nurse). Christopher Wicking's screenplay omits a crucial element from Peter Saxon’s original book (“The Disorientated Man”), which shifts the story toward a more commonplace, political narrative—something I appreciate. However, the unnecessary subplot involving a fictional Eastern European Communist nation could have been cut entirely, simplifying the plot and reducing its confusion. It feels like an attempt to force a war story into a crime thriller/horror film. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 35 minutes and was filmed in London and Surrey County, which is located just outside the city. GRADE: B-/C+
