I went into this with very little hope, which might explain why I occasionally found myself pleasantly surprised. It isn't frightening, though, and predictably "Ghostface" moves and seems to survive like a villain from a "Scooby Doo" episode, so it’s clear there are multiple individuals working together. Considering everything was essentially mapped out beforehand, I thought Kevin Williamson managed slightly better than expected. The focus of this unsettling situation is “Tatum” (Isabel May), the adolescent daughter of the now experienced “Sidney” (Neve Campbell) and her husband, a police chief named “Mark” (Joel McHale). “Sidney” receives threatening video calls from “Stu Macher” (Matthew Lillard), who claims he’s out for revenge against her family. Shouldn't he be deceased? Regardless, the number of victims begins to rise, and it becomes unclear who can be trusted. From this point forward, the story doesn’t so much derail as follow a plot that grows increasingly unbelievable, again reinforcing my belief that if you are the romantic partner in these movies, your odds of survival aren't any better than those of the expendable crew members on "Star Trek." “Gale” (Courtney Cox) appears to provide assistance and some distraction, but doesn’t contribute much as we move toward an ending centered around a highly improbable character while the entire town burns. These movies give you what they advertise, and if you watch this with the understanding that you've seen it all before, then it isn't any worse than the typical horror films produced by Blumhouse every month. I suspect there will be another "Scream" installment.
