It’s a great addition to the initial movie. I can't understand why this film has received such negative reviews. Back in 1996, Wes Craven’s Scream revitalized a struggling genre and brought fans back into horror. The strong affection for that original film seems to influence how people view the second entry in what became the Scream series. Scream 2 picks up seamlessly from where its predecessor left off, raising the stakes and pushing the self-aware humor even further. Sidney Prescott has moved past the terrible murders in Woodsboro and is now attending college, trying to build a normal life, but her sense of peace and hope for the future are quickly destroyed because the Scream killer returns for more violence... The film’s opening scene perfectly establishes the tone for what follows; we see a movie theater filled with young people pretending to wield knives and dressed as the Scream killer while watching a film called Stab, which depicts the Woodsboro murders. It's a clever observation from Wes Craven, but it’s just one of many he makes throughout the film. The jokes about sequels never grow old, and all the expected jump scares are present for enjoyment. Misleading clues appear and disappear, and all the familiar characters who survived the first movie return. Dewey & Gale have their roles expanded, and Cotton Weary, formerly a suspect and wrongly accused, is now an important character, leaving us wondering if he's a hero or a villain. This is a well-written film; it understands what it wants to accomplish and succeeds. The sound design is excellent, enhancing the chaos, and Craven demonstrates his skill in building suspense. The goal is to laugh and be frightened, so relax and enjoy a movie that, in my opinion, shows that not all sequels are bad. And I have to say, the ending doesn't let you down at all. Scream 2 is a very worthwhile and entertaining follow-up to the first film, without question. 8/10
