For this guy, the ominous number isn't "666," it's the phone number of his new girlfriend, Ramona (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Scott (Michael Cera) mistakenly believes her writing down a series of numbers are kisses, but they actually represent the former boyfriends he’ll need to defeat if he wants any chance with her. While dealing with this, he has to navigate letting down Knives (Ellen Wong), a 17-year-old who's deeply infatuated with him – he’s 22 – and also manage his living situation with his gay best friend Wallace (Kieran Culkin), which involves sharing a space resembling a bomb shelter. His challenges unfold like a video game, earning points and gaining abilities as a diverse cast including Chris Evans and Jason Schwartzman attempt to knock him out of the competition. The film benefits from an excellent soundtrack and some sharp humor from Culkin, and Cera is quite convincing as an eager but awkward geek throughout this action-filled comedy that moves quickly and maintains its momentum. It occasionally veers into cheesiness, but steers clear of typical coming-of-age sentimentality since almost everyone gets a chance to be tossed around. What lengths would you go to for love?
