My feelings about this have shifted considerably over time. Initially, upon its release, I really enjoyed it; at the time, I considered it a wonderful film, largely because of my interest in historical subjects. However, revisiting it now, while the direction is competent, the black-and-white cinematography isn't as impressive as what Mel Brooks achieved with Young Frankenstein. Having some knowledge of photography and filmmaking, I can see that many choices were questionable; they could have been improved with relatively straightforward lighting and contrast adjustments—some things are just a matter of using a filter. Ralph Fiennes’s performance is another point. While I disliked his character in the film, that was intentional, as he was meant to be unlikable. Despite having limited screen time, he delivers the most striking portrayal; it's easy to overlook Liam Neeson’s presence altogether. He even manages to overshadow Ben Kingsley, who has admittedly made some poor career decisions but is generally a reliable actor. Now, upon rewatching, there are numerous aspects that could have been handled better. I’m no longer the teenager I was when I first saw it; now, recognizing its flaws, I find myself distracted by them. It isn't a terrible film, and I would still recommend seeing it—it remains an important work—but it now provokes frustration in me.
