The combination of Dennis Waterman’s voice with an upper-class tone doesn’t really gel within this typical Hammer film. He portrays "Simon," who has his eye on "Sarah" (Jenny Hanley), who, for her part, is drawn to his brother “Paul's” (Christopher Mathews) charming ways. When the actions of that brother bring down the wrath of the town leader, he runs off to a castle damaged by fire and quickly finds himself in trouble. Both "Simon" and "Sarah," along with the local priest (Michael Gwynn), begin searching for him, but will they be able to rescue him—or even protect themselves from the malevolence of “Dracula” (Christopher Lee)? Patrick Troughton is reasonably good as the long-suffering servant "Klove," and Lee delivers adequately, though the rest of the performers are rather uninspired. The plot unfolds in a familiar manner, featuring a bat suspended by string and what seems to be ketchup and Ribena used for effects. It’s acceptable viewing, but there's an excess of conversation and not enough action until the final minutes—and even that relies too much on a thunderstorm to build any feeling of danger.
