The considerable buzz surrounding this movie didn't match my experience; I believe Paul Muni’s version from 1932 holds up better. This isn’t to suggest the film is bad, or that Al Pacino doesn’t deliver a solid performance – it simply feels overly aggressive. The dialogue and action lack any real nuance or grace. It presents violence not as an unfortunate necessity within Tony Montana's world, but rather seems to revel in it, giving the impression that the script was thin and needed extra scenes of brutality to fill out the runtime. The character development also lacks depth, which eventually became tiresome. While the production values and musical score are excellent, and Robert Loggia and Steven Bauer provide noteworthy supporting performances, I found the whole thing relentlessly jarring; a bit more care in the writing could have made a significant difference. It's enjoyable enough, but falls short of being truly exceptional.
