This movie isn't just bad; it’s truly awful because the zombie character lacks any agency. Larry Todd (Dean Martin), and Myron Mertz (Jerry Lewis) get into trouble with a gangster called "Shorty" and are compelled to leave the hotel after being suspected of murder. They team up with heiress Mary Carroll (Lizabeth Scott), who is traveling to Cuba, and discover that Cuba is an odd place, filled with strange events and Zombies! Scared Stiff was Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis' ninth movie, a redo of Paramount’s 1940 comedy-horror film, The Ghost Breakers starring Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard. It was also directed by the same person, George Marshall. Both Lewis and Martin have stated that they didn't want to remake The Ghost Breakers because the original with Hope was perfectly good as it stood. They were obligated to do it due to their Paramount contract, so producer Hal B. Wallis, correctly believing it was suitable material for them, got the film made. Among the movies featuring Martin and Lewis, Scared Stiff is considered one of their stronger works. Musical numbers and a cameo by Carmen Miranda form the core of the movie. It's typical slapstick humor that won’t appeal to those who dislike that style, but it's essential viewing for people who enjoy such antics. There are funny moments, including Lewis’ interpretation of Miranda and a hilarious scene with Jerry trapped in a trunk, enough to keep you entertained. However, fans of Dean Martin’s singing will feel let down, and there’s no denying that Scared Stiff feels like a hurried attempt to make money. Therefore, people who are new to the pair might want to skip this film and watch Artists And Models or Hollywood or Bust instead. 7/10
