Rather than the typical isolated cabin setting for a horror story, this one unfolds among cornfields deep within the woods. The narrative follows two young couples who venture outside of Toronto to locate a secluded lagoon in a rural area—their intention being to celebrate. They ignore a warning sign prohibiting entry onto the property. "Scarecrows," released in 2018, borrows plot points from “Wolf Creek” (2005) and incorporates aspects seen in "Husk" (2011) and "Scarecrow" (2013). While it’s true that the film operates on a small budget, adheres to familiar patterns, and is easily anticipated, it's skillfully made, possesses an unsettling beauty, and manages at least one unexpected moment. The musical score and soundtrack are also noteworthy. I believe it’s preferable to deliver something conventional exceptionally well than to attempt something wholly new and fall short dramatically. Director and co-writer Stu Stone demonstrates a talent for maximizing the potential of a restricted location and a small cast, resulting in visually appealing cinematography, including several shots featuring Maaor Ziv as Devon, and Hannah Gordon; though the latter to a lesser degree. Mike Taylor, portraying Farbsie, bears a resemblance to a younger, shorter Chris Pine. Umed Amin also appears as Ely. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 26 minutes and was filmed in Markham & Goodwood, Ontario, both located northeast of Toronto. GRADE: B
