This latest installment appears to be the final chapter in the franchise...or perhaps not. Staziak (Daniel Quinn), formerly a novice officer, is now working undercover as a detective—apparently, he managed to have at least one successful year on the job. He employs his scanning abilities to apprehend criminals and stop those with malicious intentions. We are introduced to an antagonistic scanner (Patrick Kilpatrick)—another one of these characters—who has broken free from a psychiatric facility and is attempting to harm Staziak. Apparently, this villain possesses the ability to drain the energy from other scanners. The ultimate confrontation between the good and bad scanners felt predictable as they engaged in their typical scanner conflict. Early on in the film, Staziak deceives a kidnapper into believing he’s an associate rather than law enforcement by utilizing his “scanning” power. However, the director reuses the identical special effect from "Scanner Cop," but applies it to a completely different situation. A recurring issue I've noticed throughout this entire series—and I have watched every film—is that the nature of the scanners’ abilities is never clarified. We observe scanners compelling others to obey them and scanners being scanned, but what exactly does “scanning” involve? This question has not been properly addressed, and now machines can be scanned as well? The narrative of a virtuous scanner battling an evil one is familiar territory, yet it's still presented in this video. The film was released several years ago without a sequel, however, seeing the revival of movie franchises like James Bond, Halloween, and Friday the 13th, I’m not expecting much. In a demonstration of complete lack of originality, every installment in this series features an exploding head, though none have reached the level of brutality seen in the initial film. This final battle is disappointing. The film is officially titled "Scanners 4: The Showdown."
