Phil Carlson does an admirable job maintaining momentum throughout this thriller. It isn't necessarily exceptional, but knowing who murdered the spouse of "New York Express" editor "Chapman" (Broderick Crawford) didn’t diminish my engagement with the inquiry led by his journalist “McCleary” (John Derek). The question becomes whether he can locate the person responsible with so few leads. This feels particularly appropriate given that the newspaper they both work for has devolved into something of a tabloid – making uncovering information and assembling evidence their standard routine. Derek, along with his dissatisfied journalist girlfriend Donna Reed ("Julie"), form a surprisingly effective team in their pursuit of answers, and Crawford is excellent as the gruff newspaper publisher. The lines are spoken rapidly, and the film’s rhythm creates an authentic depiction of daily life at a newspaper and during a murder investigation. Even the resolution possesses a certain level of respectfulness – I nearly hoped the killer had evaded justice!
