Marlon Brando portrays an American pilot stationed in Kobe, Japan, following the conclusion of World War II in 1951. The narrative centers on his interactions with his fiancée back home and a Japanese performer, complicated by military regulations forbidding relationships with local women. James Garner and Red Buttons appear in supporting parts, while Ricardo Montalban plays a well-known Kabuki artist. “Sayonara” (1957) stands out due to Brando’s portrayal of a good-natured Southern officer, the depiction of Japanese culture and settings, and the social norms of the era, alongside James Garner's early work. It shares some qualities with “The Ugly American” (1963), though I would say it is superior. Comparisons can also be drawn to “Désirée” (1954), even though that film takes place during a different historical period. At two hours and twenty-seven minutes, the movie feels somewhat extended, but this didn’t bother me. Filming occurred in Japan, with additional scenes completed in Burbank and Hollywood. GRADE: B
