Two strangers, Adam, a photographer played by Leigh Whannell, and Lawrence, portrayed by Cary Elwes, find themselves inexplicably bound to pipes at opposite sides of a room. Each has a small recording device in their pocket, and the only way to hear it is through a tape player held by a dead man positioned in the middle of the space. Some cleverness is required to access the equipment needed to play the tape and perhaps discover why they’ve been placed there. It turns out what they hear isn't pleasant, and as time runs short, they must find a way to rely on one another while facing an ominous threat. Simultaneously, police officers, including Danny Glover, are questioning a woman who may have escaped from a similar setup, and she might offer some insight into the malevolent person behind it all – someone who orchestrates events without directly committing violence, demonstrating remarkable control. Elwes and Whannell, who also penned the script, both give noteworthy performances, as does the unsettling and rather unclean prison setting they’re trapped in. The story interweaves their narratives through contemporary scenes and flashbacks, revealing why these men have drawn the attention of this vengeful “jigsaw killer.” While not overly violent, there are moments of gore; it's the film's psychological aspects that elevate it. It consistently explores questions about survival—or perhaps more accurately, how far someone might go to ensure their own well-being, even at the expense of others. The dialogue is effective, conveying frustration without resorting to shouting or profanity. Ultimately, I became invested in what would happen to these characters, but with time pressing down on them, what are their prospects? It’s a gripping and suspenseful movie that brought to mind “Se7en” (1995).
