I usually prefer older movies, particularly horror or thriller films, but I did go see installments three and five when they first came out—even though it's not really the proper way to watch a series, I just didn’t mind. They struck me as interesting and acceptable, for reasons I can’t quite explain. Now that I have a partner who loves horror films and my son is also thirteen and into them, I figured I should give the initial film—the one that's currently considered good—a look. There’s an immediate sense of quality from seeing actors like Cary Elwes and Danny Glover; it’s the same thing Bette Davis and Joan Crawford brought to movies such as 'What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?'. This was noticeably better than I thought those later entries were.
