I saw this movie as part of a school assignment. Saving Private Ryan felt like a gorgeous and, most importantly, authentic portrayal of events. The filmmakers depicted what wartime conditions were truly like. Much of the story unfolds in Europe during 1944. It centers on American soldiers deployed to Europe to confront German forces. James Francis Ryan and his brothers are sent overseas as part of the military effort. Following the Normandy landings, it’s discovered that all of his other brothers have perished, leaving him as the sole survivor. Consequently, Corporal Miller is given orders to locate him and bring him back. Tom Hanks portrays Corporal Miller, while Matt Damon takes on the role of soldier Ryan; there are also the members of Corporal Miller's unit. I believe the characters were developed with care because they include individuals who display courage alongside those struggling with the realities of war. This illustrates that not every service member was as idealized as popular perception suggested. The film’s set design struck me as very convincing. The crumbling buildings and battle scenes in the background added to the sense of realism. I also appreciated the sound effects; for instance, the gradual approach of a tank was clearly audible.
