Wuchak on Saturday the 14th

5/10 · Mar 23, 2020

It's a diverting horror comedy, though ultimately not very deep or impressive. A typical family—featuring Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss among the cast—finds themselves the recipients of an unsettling old house in Erie, Pennsylvania. However, they aren’t the only ones with designs on the property; a centuries-old vampire and his bride (Jeffrey Tambor and Nancy Lee Andrews) also have their sights set on it. Severn Darden appears as Van Helsing. A series of amusing events follows. “Saturday the 14th” (1981) is a blend of comedy and horror that doesn’t parody “Friday the 13th,” but instead takes aim at films like "Dracula," "Jaws," "The Creature from the Black Lagoon," "The Birds," and other movies about monsters. The film possesses an enjoyable spirit and provides some laughs, but its action is largely confined to the mansion, and the plot isn't strong enough to sustain interest. There was room for more development of the story’s ideas. Still, Kari Michaelsen as the daughter brings a welcome energy to the female characters. She was 19 years old during filming, though she appears younger, around 15 or 16. Nancy Lee Andrews, playing the vampire bride, is also memorable, but her role could have been more substantial (she was once engaged to Ringo Starr). The movie has a running time of one hour and fifteen minutes. GRADE: C
