Having followed the work of filmmaking brothers David and Nathan Zellner and appreciating their distinctive style of humor and storytelling that often feels a little awkward, I entered "Sasquatch Sunset" with considerable anticipation—perhaps too much. Unfortunately, it proved to be largely unfunny and overly dependent on crude jokes, making this strange film about a family of Sasquatches a significant failure across the board. This absurd movie is presented as a poorly executed nature documentary, offering an exclusively observational look at a year in the life of a sasquatch family. The group includes the leader (Nathan Zellner), the female (Riley Keough), the male (Jesse Eisenberg), and the child (Christophe Zajac-Denek), but their existence isn't particularly captivating. They search for food and explore their surroundings, with frequent sniffing, barking, flatulence, bowel movements, and scratching. Even a fictional depiction of the daily routine of a sasquatch family quickly becomes tedious. It’s possible that if the Zellners had opted for a more conventional mockumentary approach, the film wouldn't feel so slow-moving. The talented independent cast can only do so much when their lines consist primarily of barks and grunts. Concealed beneath layers of fur and makeup, the performances require considerable physical acting, which would have been more effective with more broadly comedic moments. The screenplay feels as though it was written by teenage boys eager to include every possible bodily function and sexual innuendo they could imagine. It’s also concerning that I frequently questioned whether something was intended to be humorous, because the film's intentions were so unclear. However, one thing was certain: I didn’t laugh. I found nothing amusing, only odd and unpleasant—and that’s saying something coming from a fan of the Zellners’ work. Despite its shortcomings, what’s notable is that I remained invested in what would become of these creatures, even if their ultimate fate proved disappointing. The film skirts the edge of being a complete disaster, yet I couldn't bring myself to look away. It isn't so terrible that leaving would be warranted, but it also isn’t good enough or entertaining enough to recommend, which leaves "Sasquatch Sunset" in a sort of limbo for obscure films. It raises the question: who exactly is this movie intended for?
