The advertising campaign surrounding Sanctum heavily emphasized James Cameron's involvement, which isn't entirely surprising. What resulted is essentially a visually polished demonstration of 3D filmmaking techniques; it's a disaster film filled with predictable elements and plot devices common to this type of movie. Does it provide entertainment? Is it exciting? Definitely! The visual effects are impressive at times, as is the scenery, and several sequences really stand out. If you’re willing to overlook the abundance of cheesy and overused tropes, there's a lot to enjoy within those dark and claustrophobic cave systems. Alister Grierson directed the film, but it feels very much like a Cameron production—a mixed bag that embodies both his strengths and weaknesses. Consider that as you wish. 6.5/10
