It’s difficult to know where to start with this one. As I often mention when a film receives such a low score (and it’s only the ninth time I’ve given something a 1/10, for what that’s worth), it's not meant as a personal criticism; I have respect for everyone involved in making movies and realize how challenging filmmaking is. It never feels good to deliver negative feedback, but this… goodness gracious. The scriptwriting is the first problem that comes to mind. The dialogue! Honestly, I can’t recall another movie with such consistently dreadful lines. I lost count of how many times I had to physically block my ears out of embarrassment. You get the sense that whoever wrote it—apparently Werner Herzog—thought they were channeling William Shakespeare when crafting these scenes. It's not just bad on its own; the words don’t even suit the performers – none of it sounds natural coming from them. And speaking of the actors, their performances are also problematic. They’re clearly struggling with what they’ve been given, but I expected more—especially from Michael Shannon, whom I usually enjoy watching, though his work here is... dubious, to say the least. The awkward dialogue certainly didn't make things easier. Veronica Ferres does her best and seems pleasant enough, but ultimately it doesn't work well. At least the Arancibia children bring a bit of warmth to the proceedings. These kids appear roughly halfway through the movie and remain present until the conclusion (and it’s not their fault, just the nature of their characters). The scenes featuring them and Laura, played by Ferres, are nice on their own, but they feel completely jarring and disconnected from what came before—to the point that any sweetness is quickly lost. I always hesitate to award a 1/10 because it seems severe, but in this case, it's entirely justified. It’s truly dreadful, even at just under 90 minutes. The children and some attractive locations are about all I can find positive to say.
