This new take on Salem’s Lot provides a welcome revival of traditional vampire horror, managing to recreate the unsettling feeling present in Stephen King's story set in rural Maine. It differs from many contemporary adaptations by keeping a quick, absorbing rhythm that sustains suspense throughout. The visual style evoking the 1970s is quite impactful, employing darkness and muted colors to build a real sense of fear as the vampire menace gradually takes over the community. The movie does particularly well with how the monsters look, presenting vampires with glowing eyes that are considerably more frightening than what’s usually seen in this kind of story. Lewis Pullman heads up a solid group of actors who bring an authentic quality to the fight for survival, making it feel like there's something important at risk.
