This new film adaptation of Stephen King’s *Salem’s Lot* feels like what Coles Notes used to be for classic literature—a condensed version that makes things accessible but loses something vital in the process. It's an abbreviated telling of King’s vampire story, unfolding with a somewhat rushed and superficial approach. Important details are glossed over, sacrificing the gradual build-up of suspense that is so essential to the narrative, as the audience pieces together what’s happening in this small town. The most unsettling aspects of the story come across very early on. Essentially, it's *Salem’s Lot* for people who want a quick version. To be honest, I still think the original film starring David Soul is the best adaptation of King’s work that has ever been made. Ultimately, this latest take isn’t terrible, but it moves through the plot too quickly, which mostly ruins the unsettling atmosphere that, in my view, lies at the center of this frightening story.
