A man named Flowers (played by Ben Gazzara) believes he can easily establish a brothel in Singapore and then use the profits for a comfortable life back home. When he arrives, he encounters several British expatriates and befriends William, portrayed by Denholm Elliott—a respectable accountant who isn't particularly concerned with the workings of the establishment beyond managing its finances. As expected, the local Triad organization disapproves of his business activities, but developments in Vietnam could unexpectedly lead to someone supporting his increasingly dangerous operation. At first, I felt Gazzara wasn’t strong enough to carry the film, however, Elliott delivers a genuinely moving performance and the movie benefits from a dependable ensemble cast of well-known British actors; as a result, the narrative becomes an intriguing look at a person who does possess certain principles—even if he isn't overly concerned about how he acquires his wealth. As things unfold, even those values start to be questioned. The film takes some time to get going, but seeing Flowers’ initial cynicism change and develop is worthwhile.
