A perfectly acceptable way to spend some time, and I could see myself watching it again at some point, though I don’t feel comfortable suggesting it unless you’re really stuck for entertainment options or have a particular fondness for action-adventure stories centered around archaeological themes. It seems like an odd effort to recreate the spirit of a 2005 Indiana Jones film, or perhaps something akin to Alex Quartermaine with Matthew McConaughey in the lead role. I wouldn't have guessed that either Matthew McConaughey or Steve Zahn were particularly suited for action roles, but they do surprisingly well, even if it doesn’t always ring true. Rainn Wilson and Penelope Cruz are also involved in the action sequences...take that as you will. The initial concept is somewhat intriguing: a search for an American Confederate ship located somewhere in Africa. To make things even less straightforward, Penelope Cruz portrays a doctor attempting to contain a disease originating from a nation ravaged by conflict. The whole thing feels like a collection of implausible events unfolding within a setting that’s too grounded and realistic to support the kind of fantastical narrative you'd expect. The plot seems overly reliant on contrivances, despite any ingenuity displayed by the characters. It’s an acceptable film, but there are almost certainly other choices out there that would prove more rewarding.
