After being falsely charged with murder, "Smith" (played by John Wayne) breaks out of jail with a mission to find those responsible and prove his innocence. It just so happens that he runs into "Conlon" (Lane Chandler), who leads him to the gang's concealed headquarters, where Smith quickly becomes involved in their activities. During a trip to town, he finds a way to warn "Miss Sally" (Nancy Shubert) about an upcoming robbery; when the sheriff arrives, Smith is viewed with suspicion by the gang. Now, he must navigate both the law and the gang while attempting to discover who committed the crime. The version I watched was unfortunately colourised – something that should be outlawed like a violation of international agreements – and it significantly diminished the film’s charm; however, the conversations are quite brisk, Yakima Canutt is outstanding in the fight scenes, and the plot itself holds up well.
