Given that there are already eight movies in the Japanese series, including collaborations with Kayako from The Grudge, it seems like The Ring franchise might be getting too familiar. Considering the original director of the first two films is back for Sadako, one could hope for something good. This film was... pretty unremarkable. There wasn't anything particularly memorable about it; it didn’t bring anything fresh to the series. It’s simply Sadako haunting a new group of people with another story. Still, being average isn’t terrible for the ninth movie in an ongoing series. At this stage, looking at other franchises, one would expect something closer to a 1 or 3 out of 10. A rating of four out of ten is fairly respectable considering how far along the franchise has come. Sadako does have some genuinely tense scenes that made me look away from the screen feeling uneasy and with my heart pounding. The suspense remains a strength throughout the series, and I think that’s partly because Nakata Hideo returned to direct this one. Combining an urban legend with a curse-ghost haunting plot is really about all it has going for it. Hideo continues to demonstrate his skill in building suspense, and honestly, that's the only reason I would consider watching this again – for those few moments where Hideo creates some real tension. The ending is pretty bad, especially the last couple of scenes, so Sadako doesn’t really live up to what The Ring franchise has established over time. I almost wish they would just let Sadako rest and be at peace. With this somewhat disappointing ninth film, it's probably time to move on from Sadako, allow her to escape her curse, and end the series. Sadako is barely holding together – a tenth installment wouldn’t even manage that.
