The fundamental problem with Sacramento, directed by Michael Angarano, seems to stem from how the director approaches and explains the central idea: bringing an old friendship back to life. This concept doesn't really develop until late in the movie. When I say it’s undeveloped, I don’t mean that the film completely ignores this theme—though you could argue that too—but rather, the way it is presented initially creates issues. The idea of reconnecting with an old friend gets overshadowed by other topics like dealing with adult responsibilities and being afraid to confront what life throws at you. From the start and through how we meet the characters, everything feels unbalanced and frustrating. I’m curious about those repeated scenes of Glenn having a breakdown. Is he struggling with mental health issues? What's going on in his marriage? It also strikes me as odd that this depiction of married life—connected to one of the secondary themes—is shown the way it is. Are these people truly connected, or is something else at play here? To me, the female characters seem to exist only physically; they lack any real emotional depth or inner lives. The men don’t fare much better, coming across as immature. Neither of the main women display a sense of femininity, emotion, or resolve and don't even fulfill basic character roles. But let's think about the film's visuals for a second. What’s the difference between the individual shots and those with two people in them? How much individuality do they convey? I feel like the characters are so poorly developed that almost no scene manages to create a sense of friendship, particularly an old one. The images, similar to the characters themselves, mislead you. The relationships seem completely unbelievable and forced. Even the worry about having a child feels empty. Ultimately, none of the film’s themes ever progress enough for the story and characters to truly be based on them.
