A serviceable action film. S.W.A.T. doesn’t particularly stand out; if released a decade prior, opinions might have been more favorable. There's a lengthy queue of action movies that provide entertainment without significant effort, and some, like this one, rely on a strong cast to carry the movie, while others simply overload things with explosions, assuming that fulfills their purpose. Don’t anticipate anything new or strikingly energetic; S.W.A.T. is adequate enough. The story centers around Samuel L. Jackson leading a team of five police officers who are tough and assertive. Following extensive training and introductions to the characters' personalities and backgrounds, their primary objective is to prevent a drug lord from escaping prison after he offers a large sum of money for his release. Expect explosions, betrayals, and the reappearance of someone from the past, foreshadowed by an event at the beginning. Joining Jackson are Colin Farrell, Michelle Rodriguez, LL Cool J, Josh Charles, and Brian Van Holt. Olivier Martinez portrays the unsavory antagonist, while Jeremy Renner delivers another portrayal of a volatile character. Director Clark Johnson doesn't quite escape his television background, as the film frequently feels like an extended TV episode, but his action sequences are well-executed, and he has capable actors to prevent it from being entirely forgettable. “Competent” is the defining characteristic; it’s an acceptable way to spend time for those who enjoy action movies, though it suggests that the genre hasn't progressed much in recent years. It’s disappointing because the premise held considerable promise. 6/10
