This film bears a strong resemblance to something Tim Burton might create. It recounts Chris Landreth’s story about Ryan Larkin, a fellow animator who received considerable praise and an Academy Award nomination. Larkin has struggled with alcohol, recently overcame a cocaine addiction, and now lives day-to-day with just C$10. The animation is remarkably impactful; it shifts between complete figures, skeletal forms, and transformations of human shapes into imagery—or the reverse—creating a rather eerie foundation for the interview that follows. At times, it feels as though Landreth is concerned he might be on a similar trajectory toward creative ruin. I was previously unfamiliar with either man, but thankfully, the narrative incorporates segments from two of Larkin's earlier projects. "Walking" (1968) is truly remarkable—the level of detail and care put into the hand-drawn musculature is simply astonishing. It’s among the finest animations I’ve ever encountered; it blends reality with fiction in a somewhat disturbing way, while also offering glimpses into the personalities of those involved. I would definitely recommend spending 15 minutes to watch it.
