This movie isn't just a good racing film; it's an excellent one, without question. Ron Howard manages to inject a serious dose of excitement into the viewing experience through depictions of competition, peril, and high-pressure races. The visuals and narrative construction put you right in the middle of the action, conveying the danger and intensity of each event. We see drivers suffer terrible injuries, even death, which leads characters to confront their own vulnerability every time they get in a car. They all react uniquely as they try to deal with the hazards of pursuing their passion. I went into this not expecting much, but the factual account of Niki Lauda and James Hunt, presented with Howard’s trademark realism and raw energy, proved to be remarkably absorbing. The racing sequences are expertly shot and paired with a story that focuses on the characters involved. It's worth noting the R-rating means there is some nudity and sexual content, but if you’re okay with skipping those parts, the rest of the film delivers.
