I’m venturing further into a dark world! Lili Fini Zanuck directed Rush, with Peter Dexter adapting Kim Wozencraft’s novel for the screenplay. The cast includes Jason Patric, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Sam Elliott, Max Perlich and Gregg Allman; Eric Clapton composed the music and Kenneth MacMillan handled the cinematography. The film follows two narcotics officers as they descend into a troubling situation from which escape seems unlikely. Filmed in Texas, Rush is a neo-noir characterized by its oppressive heat, humidity, and feeling of being trapped. It might not possess all the familiar visual cues of older films in the genre, but it boasts striking photography—and Eric Clapton’s score complements the pervasive sense of impending disaster. The story explores themes of corruption and addiction while also portraying a struggle for love, yet ultimately, this is a journey into classic noir territory, where things are harsh. Jason Patric and Jennifer Jason Leigh deliver strong performances when given compelling material, and they handle their roles well here. Gregg Allman’s portrayal as the antagonist doesn't quite work—he resembles Rick Wakeman more than anything else! It’s also disappointing that Sam Elliott isn’t utilized to his full potential. Nevertheless, this film is worthy of inclusion on lists of neo-noir films. Its deliberate pacing requires viewers to invest in its underlying ideas and allow them to linger, but the effort is worthwhile because it maintains a noir sensibility right up until the very end. It earns a rating of 7.5 out of 10.
