It feels like a more grounded version of Terminator; the idea of robots taking over the world in an obvious way wouldn't really make sense, as that would be too wasteful. We’re already seeing machines like this appearing, and they could very well lead to problems... ...particularly when it comes to economic hardship, even if we never reach a technological singularity. It definitely shows its age; in fact, the film embodies being dated, and I noticed that even back when I first watched it as a child in the early 90s (thanks to Suncoast Video), it felt old-fashioned... but it was still enjoyable. The story is well told, Jack Ramsay comes across as realistic and isn't portrayed as an exaggerated action hero (thank you, Tom Selleck), and the film progresses at a comfortable speed, striking a balance between science fiction elements and believability. And, watching it again after many years, it still holds up despite its age. Ultimately, I was entertained, even though Alley falls into the trap of playing a stereotypical 80s female character rather than a fully developed person. It’s saying something that any movie where Gene Simmons delivers a good performance isn't just well-made but also suggests the director is skilled at getting solid performances from the cast.
