Louisa Moore - Screen Zealots on Run Sweetheart Run

7/10 · Mar 27, 2020

The recent rise in horror movies featuring female leads means stories about women in genre films aren’t quite as new or surprising anymore. So, when a filmmaker decides to make a scary movie centered on the female experience, it needs to be bold and innovative. “Run Sweetheart Run” fits that bill; it's a bizarre, twisted story of female empowerment that is both frightening and politically charged. Following a difficult breakup, hardworking single mother Cherie (Ella Balinska) is arranged for a blind date with the charming Ethan (Pilou Asbæk). He’s polished, captivating, and effortlessly likeable. After agreeing to stay at his house for a nightcap, Ethan violently attacks her. She manages to escape from this dangerous predator, but only briefly. Alone on the streets of Los Angeles, barefoot and wearing a blood-soaked dress, Cherie finds that people ignore her pleas for help, assuming she’s addicted to drugs. When the police finally arrive, it becomes clear that Ethan has powerful connections, and everyone seems to be against her. It turns out he's a hunter who enjoys stalking his female prey throughout the evening. Writer-director Shana Feste delivers an extremely unpleasant scenario. Cherie is already uneasy during a strange Uber ride on the way to her date, and things only get worse from there. The story will likely connect with many women, as Feste realistically portrays what many single women consider their worst possible nightmare. It prompts viewers to wonder how they would react in such a situation, as the main character draws upon all of her strength, resourcefulness, and intelligence to survive. The film directly confronts toxic masculinity like an explosive device filled with social and political horror. There's a clear commentary about people of color, particularly minority women who experience assault. The idea that “nobody cares” about women like Cherie is repeated because individuals like her are often disregarded when they disappear—and their police cases are given low priority. The film’s observations regarding rape culture and gender politics are also impactful, especially since Ethan believes he's in control as a dominant man. He sneers that he needs to “keep girls like you in line,” even blaming Cherie for his predatory actions because she wore revealing clothing on their first date. While the final product is violent and bloody, Feste’s decision not to depict the worst of the violence onscreen might disappoint some genre fans. However, what isn't shown is more disturbing than having to witness a man brutally attacking a woman. The sounds alone are unsettling, and hearing about the attacks can be just as horrifying (if not more so) than seeing them. The film offers a stark look at patriarchy and gender dynamics but ultimately becomes an uplifting story of a resilient heroine who refuses to be a victim and fights back. The narrative is straightforward and not particularly memorable, but the themes are where this movie truly stands out. Every detail is infused with a deeply critical and political perspective on contemporary society. In a fleeting moment of cleverness, the rough cityscape of L.A. is filled with inappropriate, sexist billboards that highlight the challenges (and minor horrors) women face in everyday life. “Run Sweetheart Run” is an empowering, spirited, and inspirational thriller that will likely resonate with women everywhere. Support for everyone, but especially for the ladies.
