“Matt” (played by James Cagney) and his associate “Daley” (John Derek) narrowly avoid being killed by an angry crowd who wrongly accuse them of robbing a bank. After confronting the townspeople, “Matt” unexpectedly becomes their sheriff while “Daley” heals from injuries he received during their initial capture. Things seem promising until “Matt” begins a relationship with "Helga" (Viveca Lindfors) and plans to marry her, but complications arise as he uncovers some troubling aspects of “Davey’s” personality, and the town bank is robbed of $85,000 by a violent group. A posse is assembled to recover the stolen money and resolve the issues between the two men. I can't think of many other western movies that Cagney was in, and seeing him wearing denim felt unusual at first, but once the film finds its rhythm it becomes an excellent example of the genre, filled with gunfights and betrayals. The romantic storyline isn’t overblown, and the solid performances from supporting actors like Ray Teal, Jean Hersholt, and Ernest Borgnine contribute to a narrative that focuses less on the "wild" west and more on a community progressing toward order and legal structures. The cinematography effectively portrays both the action sequences and quieter moments, and with a bit more development of the two main characters, this is definitely worth watching.
