Jennifer Jones delivers a noteworthy performance as "Ruby," a character who is both appealing and fundamentally flawed. Originating from a less desirable area, she desires to ascend into the middle class within this North Carolina setting. An unfortunate incident leads to an unexpected encounter with "Letty" (Josephine Hutchinson), a kind but unwell woman, opening a path for her advancement. Ruby finds herself living with the affluent "Gentry" family, assisting in Letty’s care along with Jim (Karl Malden), her husband. As she gains prominence, many find themselves drawn to her, particularly “Boake” (Charlton Heston). He harbors ambitions but is outmatched by the now-widowed Jim, who chooses to marry Ruby. The hypocrisy of their acquaintances becomes apparent at this point—a sentiment that intensifies following a maritime disaster, which puts Ruby at odds with nearly everyone in town, including her own brother "Jewel" (James Anderson). While retribution might be divine, the newly prosperous and influential Ruby takes matters into her own hands, seeking revenge on numerous people, even Boake. However, he may prove to be an opponent she cannot overcome. The leading actors collaborate effectively, constructing a compelling narrative that encompasses a considerable amount within eighty minutes of drama largely devoid of sentimentality. While the resolution didn't fully resonate with me, it avoids predictability and likely represented the most plausible conclusion for this story of rising from poverty to somewhat empty wealth. It’s certainly worth seeing.
