This film delivers a genuinely enjoyable superhero experience filled with action. The visual effects are superb, but what sets it apart is that it's not simply a vehicle for showcasing those effects. Instead, the narrative draws inspiration from a significant historical period preceding Gandhi’s advocacy of non-violent resistance. The only potential criticism might be directed at the portrayal of British characters, which occasionally feels exaggerated. However, considering our perspective as Americans, how much do we truly understand about Imperial Britain's treatment of people it considered outside its rule? We are aware that in 1919, British soldiers opened fire on a group of defenseless demonstrators, resulting in numerous casualties among men, women, and children. Therefore, the film is deeply rooted in actual historical events. It’s possible that Rajamouli employed these exaggerated characters as a means of avoiding a complex issue, enabling viewers to accept them with the same suspension of disbelief applied to the two superheroes. The movie is exuberant, entertaining, and packed with action sequences, including traditional Bollywood musical numbers. I appreciated how Ram transforms into Rama, the mythological Hindu archer—an incarnation of Vishnu. I’m sure there were other cultural allusions that went over my head; but it seems when the heroes work together, they display four arms – a representation of Shiva, the deity associated with destruction, wielding a bow and arrow in two of those limbs. The storytelling and visual design are captivating. S.S. Rajamouli’s mastery of pacing is remarkable—three hours passes quickly without you even realizing it.
