Room for Rent establishes an interesting foundation based on feelings of isolation, centering on a grieving widow, Joyce, who takes in lodgers to make ends meet, a decision that ultimately uncovers more sinister motives. While the acting is noteworthy—Lin Shaye’s portrayal of Joyce is particularly unsettling—the movie doesn't fully develop the characters or introduces its central conflict too late in the story. The film creates an atmosphere of unease with appropriate visuals and builds suspense effectively, keeping the viewer involved despite a need for improved rhythm and more thorough storytelling.
