Channing Tatum includes a nod to “Risky Business” in this narrative about a thief who finds himself arrested after robbing yet another McDonald's to afford a comfortable home where he can host his ex-wife and young daughter. Facing what seems like a lifetime sentence, he develops an ingenious plan for escape, followed by an even more brilliant one that leads him to take refuge in a nearby toy store overseen by “Mitch” (Peter Dinklage). Luckily, the manager isn't particularly attentive to inventory, allowing "Jeffrey" to shut down the security system and indulge in chocolates for several weeks. Predictably, things proceed too easily, he grows restless, and soon the lure of the outside world proves irresistible. After overhearing a pessimistic discussion in the manager’s office, he takes some “borrowed” toys to a local church bazaar and meets "Leigh" (Kirsten Dunst), who works at the store, is raising two daughters, and struggling financially. His excursions become increasingly frequent, and a friendship develops between them, though he remains without funds. The solution to that dilemma puts everything at risk, but will he succeed? Tatum delivers a solid performance here, and knowing that much of this is rooted in actual events adds depth to a story that sometimes stretches credibility, incorporates elements of “Robin Hood,” and introduces us to a criminal who’s generally easy to root for. Dunst also performs well, and there's some straightforward comedy throughout the movie. It does feel overly lengthy, though; twenty minutes from the beginning could be trimmed, and perhaps more clarity could be provided at the hurried ending, but it still provides a pleasant couple of hours of amusement.
