The film presents individuals described as "Ronin," essentially mercenaries lacking allegiance to any specific entity, and Natasha McElhone, playing “Deirdre,” enlists several of them to secure a suitcase destined for the Russians from a man. The ensuing narrative unfolds as an exceptionally intricate thriller, characterized by layers of plotting and counter-plotting. Throughout, both “Sam” (Robert De Niro) and “Vincent” (Jean Reno) find themselves uncertain about the allegiances of those around them as the suitcase repeatedly passes hands—a frequency exceeding how often Katarina Witt changed her skates. A strong supporting cast including Stellan Skarsgård, Sean Bean, Jonathan Pryce, and Michael Lonsdale contributes to maintaining an atmosphere of suspense for both the characters and the audience until nearly the very end. While the film does occasionally feature shooting sequences that seem inaccurate, and the car chases eventually become somewhat repetitive, John Frankenheimer generally maintains a high level of action quality sufficient to offset these shortcomings. The script’s dialogue is rather straightforward, as are the character portrayals—there's no discernible depth or underlying political commentary; it simply functions as a traditional thriller with an outstanding cast who perform their roles convincingly.
