Baz Luhrmann’s reimagining places this familiar tale in present-day Verona Beach, incorporating a contemporary soundtrack alongside much of Shakespeare’s original language concerning true love, revenge, and what might be the most significant tragedy ever penned in English. The longstanding animosity between the Montague and Capulet families feels ancient, and the fragile peace between them faces a serious challenge when Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet (Clare Danes) find themselves falling for each other. Because they come from opposing sides of this conflict, their romance must remain hidden to prevent further violence. As their feelings deepen, maintaining that secret becomes increasingly difficult—particularly since Juliet is already promised to another man, and her father insists she’ll be married on Tuesday! I expect most viewers are familiar with the story of these “star-crossed lovers,” and I found this adaptation enjoyable. It differs from something like "Carmen Jones" (1954), which I didn't feel benefited from a change in setting; this version, however, does succeed. The unusual combination of modern cars, firearms, and Shakespeare’s language is surprisingly successful. DiCaprio’s performance improves as the film goes on, and by the end, neither he nor Danes deliver poor performances. Harold Perrineau also gives a solid portrayal of Mercutio, and John Leguizamo effectively embodies the scheming Tybalt. Those who adhere strictly to tradition might object to how much this lengthy story has been shortened; it’s quite condensed at times, which does diminish some of the original subtlety—though Luhrmann rarely focuses on nuance anyway. I prefer to see this as an adaptation for a modern audience rather than a literal recreation. It worked well enough for me and remains worth watching.
