Hollywood’s continued use of Shakespeare seems inevitable... ...and while I appreciate seeing his work reimagined successfully—like in West Side Story, She's All That, Overboard, and the countless romantic comedies derived from The Taming of the Shrew—I don’t care for adaptations that combine contemporary settings with dialogue lifted directly from Shakespeare. The contrast felt too jarring. A WWII-era reimagining of Richard III worked reasonably well, but this film simply transplanted Richard II to a new era while retaining nearly all of the original language. Essentially, it didn't work for me.
