I had seen portions of Baz Luhrmann’s 'Romeo + Juliet' quite some time ago in high school, and my memory was that I found it very enjoyable. This time around, it didn't resonate with me as strongly as I anticipated, but it remains a film I would suggest watching; it is genuinely good. Leonardo DiCaprio has yet to disappoint me on screen – this continues to be true. While his portrayal of Romeo here is still noteworthy, it might represent the least remarkable performance he’s given so far, simply because everything else has been so strong. Claire Danes, as Juliet, also deserves recognition. John Leguizamo (as Tybalt) stood out among the supporting cast, which includes actors like Paul Sorvino, Miriam Margolyes, and Paul Rudd. Interestingly, it was reported that 14-year-old Natalie Portman was initially considered for a role alongside DiCaprio, who was then 21. I appreciate the contemporary setting and how it brings this well-known story to life, although I'm not convinced using Shakespearean dialogue was the best decision. I didn’t dislike it, but at times it felt somewhat artificial – still, it’s admirable that they attempted it.
